Breaking Down Popular BJJ Techniques: The Armbar

Coach Shelbey Ingalls

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is filled with powerful techniques that allow smaller practitioners to overcome larger opponents through leverage, timing, and precision. Among the most iconic and effective submissions is the armbar. Known for its simplicity and efficiency, the armbar is a must-learn move for any BJJ student, from white belt to black belt.

What is an Armbar?

The armbar is a joint lock that hyperextends the opponent’s elbow. By controlling the arm and applying force against the elbow joint, the technique forces the opponent to tap or risk injury. While there are many variations, the most common setup comes from the guard or mount position.

Why the Armbar is So Effective

  • Leverage over strength: The technique relies on body mechanics rather than brute force.

  • Versatility: It can be executed from multiple positions—guard, mount, side control, or even during transitions.

  • Control: Properly applied, the armbar gives the attacker full control over the opponent’s limb, limiting their ability to escape.

Step-by-Step Breakdown: The Armbar from Guard

  • Secure the Arm – Control your opponent’s wrist and sleeve or arm.
  • Break Posture – Pull their arm across your body while keeping them close to prevent escape.
  • Angle Your Hips – Shift your body to create the right angle for control.
  • Leg Placement – Swing one leg across the opponent’s head and keep the other leg across their chest/back to control posture.
  • Finish the Lock – Squeeze your knees together, keep the thumb pointed up, and gently extend your hips to apply pressure.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Loose leg control: Not keeping your legs tight allows your opponent to escape.

  • Forgetting to control the thumb: The direction of the thumb dictates the angle of the lock.

  • Rushing the finish: Applying the lock too quickly can cause injury and also reduce control if the opponent slips out.

Training Tips

  • Drill slowly to build muscle memory before adding speed and resistance.

  • Practice both sides (left and right) to become more balanced.

  • Focus on maintaining control throughout the setup, not just on finishing the lock.

The Armbar in Action

The armbar is one of the most common submissions seen in professional BJJ and mixed martial arts competitions. From Royce Gracie in the early days of the UFC to modern champions, it remains a proven, reliable technique at every level of combat sports.
