The Fundamental Techniques of Muay Thai: Knees and Elbows

Pure Martial Arts & Fitness — Campbell River
Muay Thai is known worldwide as the “Art of Eight Limbs,” a striking system built on punches, kicks, knees, and elbows. While many beginners start by learning basic punches and kicks, the real power and identity of Muay Thai comes from its close-range weapons. Knees and elbows are efficient, powerful, and incredibly effective tools that allow a fighter to dominate the clinch, control distance, and turn the momentum of a match in an instant.
At Pure Martial Arts & Fitness, we teach students not just how to throw these techniques, but how to use them safely, strategically, and with confidence. Here’s a look at why knees and elbows are so essential to Muay Thai — and how we train them at our studio.
Why Knees and Elbows Matter
Knees and elbows are the shortest and strongest striking surfaces in Muay Thai. They deliver exceptional impact with minimal wind-up, making them ideal for close-range exchanges or when opponents try to crowd your space.
Benefits include:
Explosive close-range power
High accuracy due to short travel distance
Versatility from multiple angles and positions
Low risk of self-injury compared to punches or kicks
These are the techniques that separate Muay Thai from other striking arts, and they are a core part of every student’s progression at Pure Martial Arts & Fitness.
Mastering Knee Strikes
Straight Knee (Khao Trong)
A fundamental technique every student learns early on. The straight knee is aimed directly at the midsection, driven by strong hip movement.
Technique tips:
Lean back slightly to create space.
Pull with your hands if you’re in the clinch.
Aim for the stomach, ribs, or solar plexus.
Best used when: You’re controlling the clinch or looking to break your opponent’s posture.
Diagonal Knee (Khao Chiang)
This knee angles upward and across the body, slipping around an opponent’s guard.
Technique tips:
Rotate your hip for a slicing angle.
Keep your chin tucked and head off the line.
Ideal after turning or off-balancing your partner in the clinch.
Best used when: Your opponent is blocking straight attacks or leaning to one side.
Flying Knee (Khao Loi)
One of the most dynamic moves in Muay Thai, the flying knee generates huge power through forward momentum.
Technique tips:
Jump explosively from your rear leg.
Drive your knee upward through the target.
Keep your guard tight on entry.
Best used when: Closing distance quickly or catching an opponent retreating toward the ropes.
Mastering Elbow Strikes
Horizontal Elbow (Sok Tat)
A compact, cutting strike thrown across the body like a short hook.
Technique tips:
Keep your motion tight — no wide swings.
Aim with the point of the elbow.
Use footwork to create the angle before you strike.
Best used when: Trading punches at close range or countering an overhand.
Upward Elbow (Sok Ngad)
A rising elbow used to pierce through a tight guard or catch an opponent leaning forward.
Technique tips:
Drive upward with your legs and hips.
Keep your opposite hand high to protect.
Maintain a vertical forearm.
Best used when: Opponents duck, shell up, or close the distance quickly.
Downward Elbow (Sok Tong)
A powerful dropping elbow delivered from above the opponent’s guard.
Technique tips:
Lift your elbow high before striking.
Drop your weight downward for added force.
Control the opponent’s head or posture if you’re in the clinch.
Best used when: You’ve turned an opponent in the clinch or caught them ducking.
