What to Expect at Your First Martial Arts Class at Pure Martial Arts and Fitness

Walking into a martial arts studio for the first time can be both exciting and nerve-wracking—especially if you’re a parent, a beginner looking for real-world self-defense skills, or someone exploring the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. At Pure Martial Arts and Fitness, we’ve designed our classes to be welcoming, educational, and empowering for all ages and skill levels. Here’s what you can expect at your very first class.

For Kids: Confidence, Discipline, and Fun

A Structured, Positive Environment

Our kids’ classes are structured to keep young minds engaged while teaching valuable life skills like respect, focus, and perseverance. Instructors lead with energy and encouragement, making learning both fun and impactful.

What to Bring

Kids can start in regular athletic wear—shorts or sweatpants and a t-shirt are perfect. We’ll introduce them to uniforms (like the BJJ gi) if they choose to continue.

What They’ll Learn

Expect simple drills that build coordination, balance, and confidence. Techniques are taught through games, partner work, and controlled practice. No experience is necessary—just a willingness to try!

For Self-Defense Students: Real Skills, Real Confidence

Practical, Beginner-Friendly Training

Our self-defense classes are built for everyday people—not just athletes. You’ll learn how to handle real-world scenarios with calm, effective techniques. From situational awareness to escape strategies and striking, everything is taught with safety and simplicity in mind.

What to Expect

You’ll start with a warm-up, then dive into hands-on drills in a safe, controlled setting. We focus on empowering you—not overwhelming you. You’ll leave your first class already knowing useful skills.

No Gear Needed

Just wear comfortable athletic clothing and bring water. We’ll guide you through any equipment you might want down the line.

For BJJ Beginners: A Supportive Start in a Complex Art

What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

BJJ is a grappling-based martial art that emphasizes leverage, technique, and control—perfect for self-defense, fitness, and competition. It’s known as “the gentle art” because it allows a smaller person to defend against a larger opponent using strategy over strength.

Your First Class

Expect a group warm-up, followed by learning a few core movements like shrimping, bridging, and positional control. You’ll also practice a technique or two with a partner under close supervision.

No Experience? No Problem.

Most of our students started with zero martial arts background. Everyone is here to learn—and our team is committed to making your experience enjoyable, challenging, and rewarding.

Across All Programs: A Safe, Friendly Community

At Pure Martial Arts and Fitness, we pride ourselves on creating a welcoming space for everyone. Whether you’re 6 or 60, nervous or confident, you’ll find a team of instructors and students who want to help you grow. Our goal isn’t just to teach martial arts, it’s to build confidence, character, and community.

Ready to try your first class?
Whether you’re enrolling your child, learning to protect yourself, or stepping onto the BJJ mat for the first time, we can’t wait to meet you.

Come train with us at Pure Martial Arts and Fitness. Your mind and body will thank you.
